This painting contains powerful symbols of hope, survival, and ultimate triumph rather than danger. Capturing the exact historical feel of a pirate ship finally dropping its anchor after safely navigating the dangerous strait. Though the legends of Tortuga belong to the Caribbean, this canvas charts a different course across the treacherous Strait of Messina. For centuries, Mediterranean corsairs and smugglers braved the volatile currents and rocky shores between mainland Italy and Sicily—waters once feared as the home of the mythical sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis. The Strait of Messina is historically notorious for volatile tidal currents and whirlpools. In classical mythology, this treacherous stretch of water was feared as the home of the twin sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis. The title beautifully frames the painting not as a scene of conflict, but as a celebration of survival. It is an artistic monument to finding your own "Sanctuary" after navigating the most volatile and dangerous straits of life.
